Flagship Show Returns

There's only one flagship show on Radio Nintendo, no matter what others might say, and that is LIVE NINTENDO! And after going off air for just over 6 months, GreenYoshi's life schedule is [very slightly somewhat] a bit more stable, so is able to bring back the show with Rhade on your lovely peaceful Sundays to continue rambling about our weeks and game franchises.

For those who are new to our show, please read its description and take a listen to the existing 52 podcasts HERE.

We're still not sure of the Nippon Surprise section is returning, seeing that we're actually running out of good sources for hilarious Japanese audio feeds, we might need to switch to another theme. Not to worry, you'll find that out when the show actually starts again.

Speaking of which, that start time is 8pm GMT+1 (or British Summer Time, if you will). Because time zones and daylight savings and all that kerfuffle would just confuse everyone, I recommend you just check the homepage of our site to get the time for YOUR time zone. Because you see, it's magic and automated to do so.

See you on air!

Time for some Ponyville!

Basically, the Sailor Senshi (Sailormoon) thing didn't really work out last year. Too many people liked it and it was shining some light on the website.

So this year, I thought I'd go for something fabulously new to give the place a real Marmite situation (for those who don't understand that meaning, please Google). Since we love our colors here this seems like the best new fit!
April Fools! (duh)

We're not abusing the 24/7 stream today for the sheer fact that some of you will murder us for it. So just enjoy the scenery of Ponyville on the site....amongst other things.

Thank you for your continuous donations! We have hit target for for the first quarter of this year. We're in the process of looking for alternatives on how we can get a higher listener cap at a cheaper rate but keep the amount of control we have over the stream. We've been hitting out 25 listener cap ever since it was put in place and I feel the strain everyone's going through (via complaints x_x)

However, thank you for continuing to keep us alive! This is the last stretch of donations before we hit our first year of being self afloat! You guys are awesome
We at Radio Nintendo wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
However, Austin also wants a word with you, in person. So watch this video to see what he has to say!

Thank you for your continued support in numbers. As of this message, we are just 19 downloads away from hitting 18,000 total downloads since May this year! Can we hit that number just before Christmas Day? We hope so!

This is the last news update for 2011 as the heads are busy and off the system for a bit, so we'll speak to you in 2012!

Love from,

The December Update - What to Expect

Time sure has flown by! In our May update, we implemented a download counter. This reading has now hit a total over just over 14,000 downloads! Thank you guys so much for the support in sticking around, and for the continuous donations! We couldn't have done it without you.

However, as always, websites need their incremental update, and it just so happens to be Radio Nintendo's turn again. Click the Read All link below to find out what to expect. If you don't fancy doing that, at least partake in our current poll to help us make one particular decision for this upcoming change |

Remember that this is still a preliminary list of thing we'd like to get done. You may expect more or less changes in each area as December approaches. We'll post a final list of alterations after we're done.

We should note that this isn't a semi-major update like in May, but it should address many issues that we've faced since that time. This will be more of an 'RN 6.6', since we think this design and layout can last for just a little bit longer before we change it once more. They're pretty big plans, but in the meantime, the following will see you through for the moment.

Playlist Alterations
Because of the lack of staffing in this department, we haven't updated the playlist as much as we'd hope to, as well as initial fears that uploads would eat into the server's bandwidth allowance. Thankfully, I cleared the latter with the streamer host they say it won't affect it! So we've currently got plans to add the following to our 24/7 playlist rotation:
-Idents (which vanished when we changed from Icecast to Shoutcast
-Secret of Mana
-Terranigma
-Illusion of Time
-Pokemon R/B/G/S/R/S/D/P/B/W (basically, all missing Pokemon games)

Public Website Alterations
In short, pretty much 'fix things that were broken from the May Update that never got fixed'. This includes:
-Staff Page
-Remove encapsulating table box completely (by design, tables should be completely obselete for layouts now)
-Fix Now Playing (I know, I know, this one in particular has been terrible)

Along with those, we're hoping to make one or two tweaks:
-New Header
-New Logo [maybe] (please refer to the site poll in the sidebar)

New Features
-On-site news system - As you know, we're currently relying on our legacy IPB install to run news, making commenting a chore. Moving to on-site means you'll be able to comment a lot more efficiently on what we post

-Public accounts (integrate Facebook/Twitter/Disqus logins) - Yep. To go with the previous point, you'll finally get to register on RN to comment, with the ability to register and login with you usual social accounts. This is also in preparation for the bigger RN 7.0 system update happening next year, where you'll finally get to put in requests.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

The story of Operation Rainfall

|

It doesn't affect me as much as I've been living in UK and decided to bugger off to live in Asia. Probably the most sensible move for a gamer that can afford to. So admittingly, I've not followed every step of this story myself.

But one thing's for sure, Operation Rainfall hasn't ceased to show up on my Facebook feed, and more importantly, in mainstream games media. Even if you're not a fan of RPGs or don't even own a Wii, it's hard to miss the efforts they have been putting in to release Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and Pandora's Tower for the NoA regions.

To my own surprise, when I first caught up with the hoopla, Nintendo has already translated and released Xenoblade Chronicles for Europe. They even went as far as to releasing it in Australia, a country known to either get a title preposterously late or never at all. Two predominantly English-speaking regions of the world enjoying what appears to be a truly loved Japanese RPG. Wikipedia is also showing estimate release windows for the latter two games in Europe.

So what I don't understand is this: Why is it not reaching American shores, at all? We're talking about the region that got more Final Fantasies than Europe did in the NES and SNES days. It's a country that still adores prolonged storytelling in a beautiful setting, which makes a change from your current line-up of greyscale first person shooter or try-hard realism racing games. I don't see why they should be treated any different from the European or Australian regions.

At least with Xenoblade Chronicles, it is clear by the media that it's a really good game. Additionally, for an RPG that isn't named 'Final Fantasy' to still make it into the global top 10 is quite an achievement on what's becoming an aging console.

More recently, Operation Rainfall saw a window of opportunity to tweet to Reggie Fils-Aime, in the claim that he would be 'engaging with fans' via Twitter. However, as reported by the surrounding media, it was no more than heartless PR. Take a look for yourself by going here and finding the #Regginator hashtags.

Thus, with what appears to be poignant ignorance, the team have decided to go onto their next step: Contacting global HQ. You can read all about it here, and participate should you wish to. I believe that if NoA choose to continually ignore this uproar, it will begin doing some serious damage to the company's reputation stateside.

Leaving the release 'too little too late' would defect more of the core Nintendo fans over to Microsoft and Sony. This would, in turn, encourage more developers to also head in that direction, since that's where more of the gamers would be residing. The selling point for them? Their dev kits don't feel broken. The WiiU (which sets to make the Wii redundant at some point soon, thus all 3 games) would affect sales figures, which may be used at a later stage by NoA to say 'see? we told you it won't sell here'.

Wrong.

Now is the best time for RPG fans to pull together and make this happen. Beyond these three titles, there are no scheduled RPG releases for the Wii. So, apart from Kirby, enjoy your long list of half-arsed developed fitness, dancing, singing and board games, because to be frank that's all that's going otherwise.

It's one thing being a corporate that likes to run a tight ship, doing things by the book and making sure no losses are made on the way, keeping that positive facade that the 3DS is a really good console and that the Wii still had life in it. In turn, here's 4 months of Operation Rainfall and they are still persistent that a release for the games in their region needs to happen. After being slapped in the face many times by the company they love, they're still holding strong. That is serious dedication guys, keep going! I've not seen fan backing like this for years. This is the kind of message Nintendo needs to be listening to.

Nintendo, please don't ignore them. You're right, it's not the 'next hot selling Mario title', but it's dedicated fans like these which you shouldn't overlook. Do you really want to lose this kind of brand loyalty to your rivals? They're pissed off with your add-on IR circle pad for the 3DS already, don't piss them off any more.

Yep!

You did want it, for so so long (and we're still not entirely sure why), so we finally got round to doing it. L!VE Nintendo's Original Format shows, starring a teenaged GreenYoshi from 2006-2009, is now available over on the Mario Media Browser!

A direct link to it is riiiiight HERE! Or click on the album art below to get there too.

I should note that at the time of writing, the podcasts are still being uploaded. Give it a chance, it's travelling all the way out of Bangkok over to our server in the US! They'll be all uploaded within the day to say the least.

I should also note that no tagging has been done at this stage. I am extremely busy with commercial side things for other sites at the moment, so you'll have to make do with the mostly-correct dated filenames, in YYMMDD.#.mp3 format. I've included a nostalgic album art in the folder as well for your viewing pleasures.

Please also remember that there is an AM and FM quality broadcast back then, but there are more AMs for some reason. I need to dig deeper in the derelict `ZRN folders to find out where the rest of this went.

So all in all, please enjoy!
I wish I was joking. But you all need to hear it anyway as it's had to come to this.

Before we were accidentally popularised, bandwidth was beyond anyone's issue. Radio Nintendo could happily be part of Mode7Radio Network's server (with the hosting kindly donated by Shawn/AutoDMC) and get on with being fun. We've always begged to increase our average listener count from the average 8 on a day off and 18 on a live show.
Wellp, now we've done it. But...it's been done a bit too well. It's now at the point where the server's using up 40% of its monthly bandwidth allowance in a single day. A SINGLE DAY. Putting the listener cap to 30 was actually very generous of Shawn, as with that current peak we'll still be doubler over the allowance.

This leaves us no choice but to consider the following options:

1. Donations to keep the place going and sustainable - We've started on this already so that I can buy the next month or two of the streamer off Shawn, as we've vigorously torn his bandwidth allowance to shreds. This, of course, is the nicest option, but knowing people's pockets these days, asking for donations, even if it were $1, seems to be too much to ask.

2. We approach Nintendo, again, to see if they're interested in keeping us - Yes, I've approached them once already, and they've decided to not respond to it. Back then when we had 8 listeners, they were probably right to do so. On our side, no one seemed to be biting on the idea. But now there's people pretty much gatecrashing the cap. I hope this means they notice us better and maybe get sponsored directly by them, or:

3. Nintendo allow us to get sponsored by someone else - You know, maybe like a national retail outlet. Admittingly I had a brush with my old work place, Gamestation, to see if they were interested. They too went quiet. This place isn't exactly a legal riddle that people should avoid. We're Nintendo fans that like to spread the love of Nintendo music. There's no market for this yet, and very VERY few OSTs are marketed either here (UK) or the US. Where's the harm in liking this stuff? We're defaming no one here.

4. Nintendo allow us to stick ads on the site to offset the server costs - Just another option there

5. We outright close the streamer altogether - In a response to the Facebook wall and IRC, putting the cap to 30 made me 'most unpopular person in the Nintendo community of the year', but put it this way. To sustain our current numbers would require a budget of $959.40, per year. This is a lot of money for what all the current staff consider the place to be a hobby. With this option means we can't do live shows, but podcasting will still be fine as that's running off an affordable server.

So there we have it. Those are the options. Very harsh ones indeed. We of course thank everyone for actually liking us! We love having you all about, but in its current state the place is financially unsustainable. Let me repeat, with the current cap it would cost a man $959.40 per year to run. We'd be happy to keep the place going if we can somehow even slightly offset this cost, one way or another.
